About Teddie

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Rescue ID: 1805D0048
  • General Color: White
  • Current Age: 7 Years 5 Months (best estimate)

Teddie was rescued by Humane Society International (HSI) in March 2018 from a dog meat farm just outside the city where the Winter Olympics were being held in South Korea. Yes, that's right, a dog meat farm.  Raising dogs for meat is a perfectly legitimate business in several countries, including South Korea. HSI has worked with farmers to close 12 dog meat farms in South Korea and assisted them in finding a different way to earn a living.

Teddie comes from Farm 11.  She was brought to HSI's temporary shelter in Canada where she went through quarantine and medical and behavior assessment.  Teddie came to us in May 2018.

These dogs present unique challenges as their history with people during their formative socialization months was not a positive one. They are generally mistrusting of people and will require a significant amount of patience to build a trusting relationship. It is key to her continued progress that Teddie goes to a home with at least one other well-adjusted, social dog. She is a playful young dog who really enjoys the company of other dogs. In fact, these farms dogs will typically model the behavior of other dogs in the home, which will ultimately, over time, lead to the building of people relationships. Teddie has been in a foster home since she came to us and is still sometimes hesitant to accept physical affection (pets and scratches). She does like to come up in secret and nibble and lick fingers.

She walks well on a leash but can get nervous at the sights and sounds around her.  However, she does great when there is another dog along for the walk. She gets along great and plays with the other dogs in her foster home and is has discovered the joys of treats and toys. Though there are none in her foster home, she has also shown great manners around cats.  As timid as she is, she has never displayed any aggression.

The right home for Teddie will be one with a lot of patience and love to give.  Because of her timid nature, older children who can understand her history would be best. She has never shown any unkindness toward children of any age, but younger children may be too excitable for her.

Additionally, you will need a strong vacuum cleaner as this girl sheds A LOT!

There is no doubt that in the right situation Teddie will overcome her fears and become a wonderful family member.
